I’ve been tagged in a meme by the estimable blogger Erin C., and while I don’t like to participate in memes because – like the chain letters of old – I hate passing them on to others, I feel I must acknowledge this one. Why? Because Erin is wonderful, I have a lot of respect for her writing and her work with social media, and because I am not going to Enders Island tomorrow and she is, and I will miss her and all the other people who are still students with my MFA program. Also because I can’t resist the lure of answering personal questions.
The meme asks each blogger to post 11 things about themselves, to answer questions set by the blogger who tagged them and then to pose 11 questions of their own. So I’m going to meet it half-way. I’m going to list 11 things about me and then have done it with.

I don’t know what a meme is.
A meme is hard to explain. It’s anything that becomes a “thing” on the Internet, from viral videos to chain emails and tags in blogs. Here’s the link to the wikipedia entry, which explains it better than I am able:

HA! I was always a little obsessed with those email surveys as a kid, so I have an abnormal liking toward new memes. I’m quite bummed that you won’t be on the island today. Boo. Boo. Boooooo. I love that you changed this meme to work for you, and totally appreciate you still filling it out. I have never, but would like to hear this Bill Cosby story.
Email surveys are something I almost forgot about. They were big when I was in college. Actually, I’m curious. Have you ever received an actual paper chain letter? There was a while, when I was a kid with penpals, that I was inundated with those.
